Which protein powder is right for you?

You’ll find a vast number of protein powders on your natural grocers’ shelves, including vegan, gluten-free and organic varieties. Which one is right for you?

The first consideration is protein quality, traditionally rated by biological value (BV), the proportion of a protein that can be synthesized and used by the body’s cells. The newest measure is the Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS), which measures both amino acid profile and digestibility, with the highest number being 1. Also keep an eye on sugar content and added flavorings, and check the label for other ingredients like vitamins, minerals and fiber, which you may or may not want.

Use this handy chart to decide which powder is right for you.
